Which Wedge Wire Screen Shape Do You Need?
Wedge wire screens come in different shapes. Each shape suits different applications and has unique strength requirements. Choosing the right one improves performance and service life.
1. Cylindrical (Round)
Cylindrical screens are the most common. They are used in water wells, filters, and housing for resin traps. The round shape provides uniform strength in all radial directions, making them resistant to external collapse pressure. Applications often require high burst strength. Typical slot gaps range from 0.10 mm to 5 mm.
2. Conical (Tapered)
Conical screens are ideal for centrifugal separators, hydrocyclones, and sugar refining. The tapered design creates a pressure drop that helps separate solids from liquids. Strength requirements focus on the small end, where wear is highest. Conical shapes need thick support rods to handle axial compression and vibration.
3. Flat Panels
Flat wedge wire panels are widely used in vibrating screens, drain grids, and filter beds. They are easy to install and replace. Strength is critical for supporting heavy loads and impact from falling materials. Flat panels require rigid crossbars underneath to prevent bending. They are common in mining, food processing, and wastewater treatment.
4. Arc/Segmental
Arc-shaped screens (also called sieve bends) are used in static screening applications. Slurries flow over the curved surface for dewatering or classification. The arc shape provides self-supporting strength without heavy framing. Structural requirements include resistance to flow erosion and vibration. They are often used in paper pulp, mineral processing, and sand washing.
Key Consideration
Always match the shape to your process. Cylindrical for pressure vessels, conical for cyclones, flat for vibrating decks, and arc for gravity flow. Check the operating pressure, temperature, and abrasiveness before choosing the profile wire and support rod size.
Choosing the wrong shape leads to early failure or poor filtration. When in doubt, ask us for a recommendation based on your duty cycle.
